Quick Q&A with Paula Fong

Could you please give us a quick introduction of yourself?

I’ve been with Booking.com for over 11 years in Amsterdam, in various marketing roles during this time. Currently, as Director of Growth Marketing, I’m responsible for leading our direct-to-customer marketing channels, which include email marketing, push notifications, and customer rewards and incentives.


Why did you choose to participate in The MarTech Summit Amsterdam?

A colleague who had attended before recommended it to me, and I thought, sure, why not? 🙂 This will be my first time attending, and I’m always open to opportunities to learn from others.


In your view, what is the biggest challenge currently facing Marketing Ops in the European region?

Navigating the complexity of data privacy regulations while enabling personalised, data-driven marketing at scale.


With marketing channels multiplying, how do you decide which platforms are best for building deeper customer relationships at each stage of the funnel?

Data, data, data. With the explosion of channels, the key isn’t to be everywhere, but to be where your customers are at the right time and with the right message.


What do you think is the biggest challenge companies face when trying to scale personalised experiences across the customer journey?

Unifying and operationalising customer data in a way that enables real-time, cross-channel personalisation, without breaking privacy rules or creating silos. 


What advice would you give to marketers looking to align personalisation with efficiency, especially when working in large or global teams?

Treat it like a product. Have a clear and aligned global personalisation strategy, use a modular content approach, central data, smart automation, and importantly, governance in place – to allow for governed autonomy. Start small, scale what works, and always measure impact.
